A Night of Knowing Nothing

Payal Kapadia, F/IND 2021, 96 min, Hindi/Bengali Original with English Subtitles

Young people dance exuberantly in a room. A film from the archive is projected onto its walls. These are scenes from the Film and Television Institute of India, filmschool of director Payal Kapadia. In her wonderful film ›A Night of Knowing Nothing‹ she interweaves the intimate love letters of two students at the institute with the student protests that flared up in mid-2010 as a reaction to the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party taking power. Together, the film students fight against the class system, against the discrimination of religious minorities and for the protection of public education that is accessible to everyone – also and especially in the film world. The tale of the impossible relationship between the two lovers, centered around issues of caste, shows the painful dividing lines of a torn society, whose inner contradictions swell to a crescendo of violence over the course of the film.
