Art comes from the beak the way it has grown

Sabine Herpich, D 2020, 106 min, OmeU

Art Brut has long since ceased to be Cheap Art – The »Hamburger Schlumper« with their permanent workplaces for artistic inclusion have also set a precedent in Berlin: from Monday to Friday, artists with disabilities work in the art workshop »Mosaik« in Berlin-Spandau. Many of them have since made a name for themselves. Adolf Beutler, whose work is exhibited across Europe, is the most successful artist at the art workshop with his frame-blasting drawings. Suzy van Zehlendorf reinterprets canonical works of art history in a new way by replacing human heads with chicken heads. And Gabriele Beer processes life and death in popping colors on large canvas. The film shows how life with disability and enabling create a great (artistic) freedom and questions the production conditions of art and its social relevance.
