Panel on colonial reappraisal in documentary films

Discussion on ›Journey Back Home‹ and ›Stop Filming Us‹

›Journey Back Home‹ and ›Stop Filming Us‹ deal in very different ways with colonial pasts: The first is the autobiographical story of a Hamburg director who grew up in Namibia and reflects his own history entangled with the German colonial past and with the present discourse in today’s Namibia. And in ›Stop Filming Us‹ a Dutchman in the Democratic Republic of the Congo tries to find out how whether “post-colonial” film can succeed from a white perspective. Both films face their critics and see themselves as contributions – using the means of documentary film – to an ongoing debate. For both films alternative edits are currently being developed, which want to depict different perspectives and opinions. We dare the experiment of discussing both films together, with the filmmakers, two protagonists and the audience.
