GUEST: AVI MOGRABI
The First 54 Years – An Abbreviated Manual for Military Occupation
Avi Mograbi, F/FIN/ISR/D 2021, 110 min, Hebrew Original with English Subtitles
Israeli ex-soldiers open up. Personal memories of human rights violations and attacks on civilians, systematic harassment in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It is their actions that have become part of a system of oppression. As part of the organization ‚Breaking the Silence‘, they seek to bear witness, and their words find a visual equivalent in the extensive archival footage that accompanies this film.
But the film goes on. It not only sheds light on historical events chronologically, but also presents itself as a “seminar” on how to occupy a country over a period of more than five decades. With Socratic irony, Avi Mograbi stages an “instruction manual” from the point of view of the ruling power. A satire with pitch-black humor. (as)
