The Politics of Form and Forces

Lecture by Trinh T. Minh-ha

“For me, politics permeates daily life; it is a dimension of consciousness of one’s own existence. […]
To strengthen the form means to recognize the important contribution of life as a continuous creative process.”

This lecture is about politics of form and thus a constant in Trinh’s oeuvre. For her films, this means making the examination of form in its respective application visible and always directing the audience’s consciousness to the process of production. According to Trinh, form and content are inseparably interrelated. The meaning that lies within can only become politically effective if it remains flexible and independent of authorities. “In it’s demand to mean at any rate the documentary often forgets how it comes about and how aesthetics and politics remain inseparable in it’s constitution.”
